Bald Soprano

What is an Iced Gem Detective? Is it a man in a deerstalker, holding a magnifying glass to the bosom of a girl in a wet t-shirt?

I'm in York. Everything is nice and small again. When it's nearly Christmas I will go home to Mrs Rockets.

My CV tells me I was in Scotland for six years. Why was I there, and what was I doing? Six years ago, I took something good there that fell away. The rusty bear trap of Temping held me fast. Bad things happened, but in time, something fine grew out of the Bosch.

As ever, it wasn't about the jobs, it was about the people, and it's people who have drawn me South again. Looking back, it's easy to feel as though it was all about 9-5. It wasn't all about that, but the part that was, wasn't all bad.

Here is what it says between the lines on my quantity-over-quality CV.

- I got paid to lie to old ladies who were freezing to death.

- I got to tell Huffty off for her tardiness, and shepherd hundreds of whoopsies down the main streets of Edinburgh.

- I got to meet David Shrigley, who informed me that I was a "nutter".

- I got to work in a castle, and saw the Queen.

- I helped some people who provide financial, legal and humanitarian aid in West Africa, which felt a lot more worthwhile than data entry.

- I helped to renovate a deserted laboratory, which did not contain zombie scientists, to my chagrin.

- I met a goat, but I told you about that.

Most frequent "Reason for Leaving" ... but there I met Mrs Rockets and many fine people.

I realised my dream of being a DJ! But most of Edinburgh wasn't ready for Spoilt It Island and Kill Your Darlings. The best of it was, and I'll be back to visit the best of Edinburgh, some of whom helped me move my precious things down 4 flights of stairs when it was time for me to leave Scotland. Special mention to Uncle Pe Pe.

For me, Edinburgh has many bad associations, some of which I harbour, and some of which I worked for. But no matter how long I look at my CV, I'll never forget the people who joined me in the fight between carnival and Lent. U know who U R!!1
